At School
Matching: Hardware (Pre-reader)
In this activity, you and your pre-reader learner will play a matching game to pick the right hardware for an activity while listening to a story. First, the learner will color in a series of cards with images of hardware on them. Then, you will read a story containing multiple activities aloud and your learner will point to the cards to select the hardware item that the character needs at different points in the story. There are five different variations of this activity so that learners can practice more than once.

Instructions
Since learners will need prior knowledge of hardware items to complete this activity, it is recommended to have your learner complete the previous activities in this sequence before attempting this one.
- Print out the Learner’s Sheet pages.
- Gather your supplies.
- Tell your learner about this activity: “Today, we’re going to play a game! After youcolor some cards for the game, I’m going to read a story to you where the person in the story needs help figuring out which hardware item to use in order to do different things in their day. Then, you’ll use the cards to point to the thing they should use to do what they want to do.”
- Have your learner start coloring the cards. Ask them to tell you when they are all done.
- Read the story aloud to your learner. When you get to a place where the story asks a question, ask your learner to point to the card with which item the character in the story should use to do the task described. This will happen a few times in the story and you can check the answers in the answer key provided in the next section.
- When you finish the story, congratulate your learner on a job well done!
